Conducting 6 user interviews revealed that YouVersion’s Bible app users were spending over 15 minutes searching for notes older than three months, sometimes with no with success. Users valued the ability to reflect on past learnings, yet the existing experience made this difficult.
To capitalise on the opportunity, I developed a search tool feature, enabling notes to be discovered 75x faster and supporting a more fluid, reflective user experience.
Conducting 6 user interviews revealed that YouVersion’s Bible app users were spending over 15 minutes searching for notes older than three months, sometimes with no with success. Users valued the ability to reflect on past learnings, yet the existing experience made this difficult.

While Bible app users loved using the app with 500,000,000 active users, they faced several challenges when encountering the notes section of their app:

Recognising best practices from native digital platforms, platforms with large amounts of data tend to use a search tool to help their users quickly achieve their desired tasks. When faced with this problem, I opted to choose a search tool that addresses the clutter of notes, giving users the ability to discover their notes within seconds.

Drawing inspiration from native apps that contain a lot of information, I implemented a search tool to improve user task completions within the Bible app. This new feature helps users locate their notes in seconds, even if they only remember the approximate date of creation. It simplifies the search process, ensuring users can find what they need efficiently, without having to scroll endlessly through cluttered notes.

The ease of the tool allows users to type any word, and the app will display all results related to their search. This quickly reduces the time taken to find notes, which could previously take over 15 minutes but can now be achieved in 12 seconds.

This project was completed in September 2023, a time when I was still growing in my design skills. Looking back, I can identify areas where I fell short. Reflecting on these has allowed me to apply my learnings and further refine my abilities to deliver the best outcomes for users and businesses. Here’s one example.

I made the mistake of spending over 10 minutes manually designing icons instead of leveraging an icon pack. I also wasted time recreating components I had already built. However, nothing is truly new under the sun. By reading and learning from other designers online, I discovered ways to work more efficiently; reusing my existing components, leveraging Figma plugins, and using prebuilt component sets like Relume to streamline my workflow.
